The comfort and security of a home rely on equipment whose roles often overlap. A connected roller shutter, for example, regulates indoor temperature while complicating a break-in attempt. Before making a list of products, it is essential to understand how these devices interact and, above all, to tailor their selection to the actual risk of your address.

Local risk assessment: a prerequisite before purchasing security equipment

Competitors recommend alarms and cameras without ever considering the geographical context. However, data published by Insee reveals significant disparities from one department to another: the burglary rate per 1,000 homes reaches 8.7 in Ain, compared to 2.3 in Hautes-Alpes.

This ratio changes the very nature of the investment. In a low-risk area, mechanical reinforcement of openings (certified lock, laminated glazing) may be sufficient. In a more exposed area, coupling a connected alarm with a remote monitoring service becomes relevant. Assessing local risk before purchasing avoids over-equipping or under-protecting.

To delve deeper into the categories of available devices, the equipment on Conseil Habitat details the major families of products classified by usage and budget.

At the national level, 211,596 burglaries of homes were recorded in 2025, compared to 218,156 in 2024, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior included in a September 2026 analysis. The relative decrease should not mask a level that remains high: national statistics do not describe the risk specific to each address.

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: minimum compliance versus real protection

A standalone smoke alarm (DAAF) has been mandatory in every home since 2016. Regulations evolved in June 2025, which most online guides have not yet integrated. Checking your device’s compliance with current standards is therefore a precaution to take now.

The legal minimum requires only one detector per home, even in a multi-story house. In practice, one detector per level and near sleeping areas significantly improves detection. Placing the device high up, away from the kitchen and bathroom (sources of steam), reduces false alarms.

The carbon monoxide detector, an underestimated complement

Unlike the DAAF, the carbon monoxide detector is not mandatory in all homes. However, it becomes necessary as soon as a combustion appliance is present: gas boiler, wood stove, insert. Carbon monoxide is odorless, and poisoning occurs without any noticeable warning signs.

Combining both detectors in at-risk rooms provides a much stronger foundation for fire prevention and poisoning than mere regulatory compliance.

Home automation and connected shutters: controlling comfort and security remotely

Home automation is not just about turning on a lamp from your phone. Its main interest lies in the ability to simulate a presence during vacations: programming lighting, opening and closing shutters at variable times, activating connected outlets for everyday devices.

Connected roller shutters combine three functions:

  • Enhanced thermal insulation, which reduces energy consumption in both winter and summer, without manual intervention.
  • Additional physical barrier against break-ins, especially models with certified aluminum slats.
  • Remote management via an app, allowing real-time responses or programming automatic scenarios.

Remote control also works for surveillance cameras, alarms, or thermostats. The goal is to centralize these connected devices on a single interface to avoid juggling between five different apps.

Connected alarm and camera: choose according to actual use

A wired alarm offers constant reliability, with no risk of radio jamming, but requires wiring work. A wireless alarm is suitable for already constructed homes, provided that batteries and signal range are regularly checked.

The surveillance camera, whether indoor or outdoor, only has a deterrent value if it is visible and properly oriented. A poorly placed camera reassures the owner without hindering the burglar. Favor an angle covering the main access points (front door, gate, sliding door) rather than a decorative panoramic view of the garden.

Mechanical reinforcement of openings: locks, doors, and glazing

Before investing in electronics, check the physical resistance of your access points. Burglars primarily enter through the main entrances of the home. An old front door or a low-quality lock cylinder can be forced in a matter of seconds.

  • A certified A2P lock (one, two, or three stars) withstands break-in attempts for increasing durations based on the level of certification.
  • Laminated glazing on sliding doors and accessible windows significantly slows down intrusion compared to single glazing or even standard double glazing.
  • Anti-pinch corners on the door frame prevent the use of a crowbar, the most common break-in technique.

Mechanical reinforcement remains the first line of defense, even in a home equipped with numerous sensors. An alarm signals the intrusion, but it is the physical resistance of the opening that determines how much time the burglar has before entering.

Outdoor lighting with motion detection

A motion-activated spotlight combined with outdoor lighting creates a surprise effect that is often enough to interrupt an attempt. Positioned above the front door, garage, and side accesses, it complements the mechanical system without requiring a subscription or complex maintenance.

The choice of security and comfort equipment always depends on three parameters: the measured local risk, the physical configuration of the home, and the available budget. A high-performance electrical or connected device does not compensate for a weak door, and a three-star A2P lock does not replace a compliant smoke detector. It is the interplay between these layers—mechanical, detection, and remote control—that produces coherent protection.
