Education
SRI's School Program
Survivors' Rights International, Inc. (SRI) is engaged in an
ongoing effort to educate students in middle schools and
high schools about conflict situations that have resulted in
contemporary acts of genocide, crimes against humanity, and
war crimes currently taking place around the world that are
not receiving adequate national media coverage. SRI
educates students about current genocidal atrocities being
committed against groups of people for reasons such as their
race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, or other similar
identifiable groups as either an introduction to, or as a
follow-up to several studies across curriculums, such as
Holocaust studies, world history, government, democracy and
citizenship, literature, law, human beliefs, religion,
geography, survival studies, foreign policy, or current
events.
For instance, students learn that crimes such as genocide
still occur today despite the international community's
commitment following the Nazi Holocaust of World War II that
"never again" should the world witness such horrific
atrocities on a widespread scale. Each of SRI's interactive
discussions/presentations intensely focus on one
contemporary conflict not receiving adequate media
attention, such as the civil war in Sudan. For example, SRI
introduces students to relevant legal definitions, such as
the definition of genocide as contained in the Genocide
Convention, the roots of conflict and the parties involved,
the atrocities being committed, efforts to end the
hostilities if any, political implications surrounding
outside intervention for countries such as the U.S., and the
importance of emerging international justice and
accountability of perpetrators of such crimes. From time to
time, and when feasible, SRI also invites refugees that have
been granted asylum here in the U.S. to speak to students
about their personal experiences. Students then engage in a
letter writing campaign to their representatives and key
officials concerning what they learned about the atrocities
taking place in the conflict discussed, and as a result have
the opportunity to discover that their voice can have a
positive impact on the development of policy and, most
importantly, can help to bring attention to the plight of
those unjustly victimized. In addition, following SRI's
discussions some students also wrote to key news sources,
wrote articles for their school newspapers, or organized
protests concerning the conflict discussed.
SRI also accepts student interns seeking to fulfill their
community service requirement before graduation.
