Press Release Week 1: March 1, 2005
Khartoum, Darfur
Egypt, a leader in harmonizing the Darfur crisis and a bordering
state of Sudan, is to host peace talks between the African Union
(AU) and Sudanese rebels. Originally scheduled for March 5th, the
date is expected to be in the near future. Other African countries
involved in this leadership include Chad, Libya and Nigeria.
According to previous talks the Sudanese vice president, Ali Osman
Mohamed Taha, reaffirmed his government's promise on Friday to
the withdrawal of government forces from the distressed western
region of Darfur.
Over a million people have been victimized and displaced,
hundreds of thousands have taken refuge in Chad, and tens of
thousands have died in this ongoing conflict. The AU, a
multinational force chaired by Nigeria, embarked on an efficient
effort to negotiate a cease-fire between the Sudanese government and
the rebels of the Darfur region. With a fairly new multinational
army, the AU is slowly looking to replace the United Nations as the
dominant IGO on the African continent. The force has created immense
humanitarian progress throughout the Darfur region and is estimated
to have saved thousands of lives due to its efforts.
For example, Non-Governmental Organizations report that in the
city of Kebkabiya in Northern Darfur safety monitoring and measures
conducted by the AU have helped to improve the security of its
people.
However, the size of the AU is unsubstantial and, therefore,
makes it difficult for the AU to exert considerable peacekeeping
control over the large region of Darfur. Currently, the AU is not at
its full capacity in Darfur, having only around 3,500 troops. Thus,
the AU needs to be enlarged in order to continue its campaign of
protection. Continued domestic and international support is needed
to maintain the AU's credibility. Overall, the progress made
by the AU to protect the Sudanese people from violence is
widespread. Its efforts also halted mass starvation and further
displacement. Being that Sudan is a country lacking significant
infrastructure, communication technology, and modern roads, the AU
needs significant international financial support in order to
sustain its cease-fire operation.
